Those whom have followed me either a short time or a long time often hear me talk about my appreciation and honor for being part of beginnings. This is a value that was instilled in me by my father. Well, I also understand the power of endings or as I call them: releases.
On Friday, December 14th, 2018, I had the esteemed honor and humbling experience of returning to my alma mater, the Art Institute of Charleston, to give the keynote/commencement address for the Fall 2018 graduating class. This event also marked the final commencement ceremony as the institute announced earlier this year that it would be closing.
Many often refer to commencement ceremonies as graduations. However, commencement and graduation are two different experiences. I speak on this further in my address but, for those reading, I want you to remember that a commencement marks the beginning. So, I found my assignment to be two-fold…to speak a word of finality but also to empower, inspire, encourage, and motivate both the faculty and the graduating students for a new beginning!
I never take it lightly when I’m asked to speak…I’ve been on a lot of platforms and stages. Yet, I must say that this one is one of the most special engagements as it marked my first commencement address and also there is something deeply rewarding about being asked to come back. These kind of invitations hold weight with me.
I shared a couple clips on social media and so many of you have asked to see the address in its entirety. I’m excited that it is finally available here!
Thank you for all your messages and responses. I hope that as you watch and listen while we are all in preparation to cross into this next year, that something I say here helps you #trajectifyyourlife for your next!
