What inspired me most about the Samantha Leibowitz brand is that Samantha started from such a young age. As someone who began as a young entrepreneur, I enjoy seeing the success of someone who start it early. As we know, it takes time to build anything…especially anything great. I had the pleasure of attending Samantha’s SS17 Runway Show during Nolcha Fashion Week courtesy of ChicExecs Public Relations. I was very impressed by her consistency, silhouette and statement that was present throughout her collection. After the show, we were able to chat on the red carpet for a moment…see what she had to say!
EC: So tell me a little about yourself and how you got started in the industry.
SL: I got in the industry 10 years ago when I was 14 years-old. I worked with 8 different companies in 8 years to, kind of, get a feel for all different departments within a fashion company knowing that I wanted to launch. My ninth year, I launched my company and it was the greatest feeling ever because we’re made in America. Everything’s here in New York City, which is awesome; watching your product from start to finish. I actually just hit my tenth year in the fall this year which is really exciting and we officially launched the first collection this summer and today you got to see the second collection.
EC: Excellent, excellent! Now, two things that kept coming to me watching your collection tonight were “wearable” and also “transitional.” Tell me, what does that say to you and how does that speak to your collection?
SL: So, I love a unique piece. So, that Samantha dress, the red one that pulled up, for example, that is a dress that can be worn in three different ways. It’s great if it’s hot, cold, raining all of a sudden. You hike your dress up. It’s dawn to dusk. You know, it’s comfy. It’s ready to wear. You wear it that day with a little blazer. You get home after work to go to the bar; you hike it up, take the blazer off, and it’s three outfits in one.
EC: What inspires you?
SL: I love architecture, especially in New York City. Modern architecture is the coolest thing to me. A window, for example, is what designed this fabric. So, just seeing different lines within skyscrapers here in New York
EC: I love that. I love that. On a personal note, since you started so young and you always knew that was your passion, what advice would you give to emerging designers or just anyone out there in the fashion industry that’s starting at a young age to go ahead and pursue their dreams?
SL: Work really hard because you never know who’s looking. For example, I was at a show one time and I had someone, not discover me, but [who] found me and, you know, started talking to me and then gave me a connection. That’s how I got one of my jobs. You never know who’s going to be there to see how hard you’re working and get you into that next level of life.
EC: That’s awesome! Well, I wish you the best!
SL: Thank you so much!
EC: I’m going to be watching for you and looking for more work from you. That’s exciting! Thank you!
SL: Thank you!
